The Linden Tree Coffeehouse is presenting the final show of its  37th season with a special event on Saturday, May 7 at 7:30pm,  our first Live concert in two years.  “An Evening with Sloan Wainwright and Cosy Sheridan” will be held at the Wakefield-Lynnfield Methodist Church at 273 Vernon St, Wakefield.  The location change is so that we can still offer Live Streaming to those who are not yet vaccinated or too far to come in person. 

Longtime friends, songwriters  Sloan Wainwright and Cosy Sheridan share a joy of each other’s music and artistry on stage in an upbeat, energetic, and moving evening of sharing songs.

Known for her warm and welcoming contralto voice which could “fell a redwood,” Sloan Wainwright is a member of that Wainwright Family Tree which includes Loudon Wainwright (her brother) and Rufus (her nephew). Defying standard categorization, with 10 original CDs under her belt, Sloan has a command of a variety of American musical styles: pop, folk, jazz, and blues. Her incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but also her dramatically voiced rendition of original songs. She performs with powerhouse guitarist Steve Murphy.

Cosy Sheridan has been called one of the era’s finest and most thoughtful songwriters.  The Albuquerque Journal dubbed her “ a Buddhist monk in a 12-step program trapped in the body of a singer-songwriter.” She first appeared on the national folk scene in 1992 when she won the songwriting contests at The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival and released her critically acclaimed CD Quietly Led.  She has been on the road ever since, playing clubs, concert halls, and coffeehouses across the country.

”Her user-friendly musical philosophy sets her happily apart from the myopic, self-involved songwriters,” wrote The Boston Globe. “ She is a wonderfully lively, very funny, and enormously amiable entertainer with a keen and wicked eye for the excesses of our fast-food, tv-happy  and noisome culture.”  Backed up by her bass player Charlie Koch, she plays a percussive bluesy guitar style, often in open tunings and occasionally with two capos on the guitar neck.

Only bottled soft drinks & water will be sold.  The church is easy to find from 95, take Vernon St. exit and head towards Wakefield. The Linden Tree Coffeehouse continues its 37^th season with Maine’s Jud Caswell.  The live concert will be broadcast on youtube and Facebook with a limited audience at our Covid alternative site. Jud has been the winner of several prestigious songwriting awards such as the Dave Carter Memorial Song Contest in Oregon, the Ploweshares in Pennsylvania, and Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk in Texas. Jud, this New England Notable performer, is more than a great singer and guitar player.  His songs are stories with beautiful images and interesting characters he brings to life.

Rich Warren in Sing Out Magazine described Jud Caswell as highly original and wise beyond his years!  Maine’s Jud Caswell is a little bit like a one-man folk festival. You’ve got your banjo picking, your Irish drinking songs, a rack of acoustic instruments, and a deep catalog of award-winning originals. He’s often compared to James Taylor and David Wilcox, but his songs draw on a long musical history and wide-ranging influences from jazz and Piedmont blues to contemporary folk and rock.  His sixth CD reflects his years full of music, a celebration of life, love, family, friends, and all that is wonderful about midcoast Maine. His song, Blackberry Time, got him a lot of folk radio airplay and several singer-songwriting awards from Florida, Oregon, Texas, and locally in Massachusetts.  Jud’s songs take you into his stories with clear images and characters while accompanying himself on his beautiful six-string guitar.

The title song from his sixth CD, “The Great Divide” was the #2 song on the Folk Alliance International Charts for October, 2021! This song was inspired by his grandparents – a Maine couple who celebrated 70 anniversaries together. It starts off with his old family anecdote: “Nana was a registered Republican, Pappy was a Democrat for life…” There was never a time I didn’t know that about them. And there was never a time that I saw any strife caused by it. A relationship like that seems almost inconceivable today. That makes me sad. And it makes me worried. It makes me want to find a way to reach out a hand – even when I feel it being slapped away. I take great pride in the fact that this song has been loved and shared by Democrats and Republicans alike. The Linden Tree Coffeehouse will present another NEW ENGLAND NOTABLE singer-songwriter on Saturday, March 5 at 7:30 pm.  Due to continuing COVID restrictions, Geoff Bartley will be performing live in our alternative site. The 37^th season of Linden Tree’s acoustic music concerts are easily viewed on Facebook and You tube from www.LindenTreeCoffeehouse.org. 

Linden Tree is very excited to have back this season, Geoff Bartley. He is a blues-, folk-, and jazz-influenced fingerstyle acoustic guitar player, singer, songwriter and harmonica player. The folk press has called him folk music at its best (~ Brian Baker, Music Reviews Quarterly, Arden, North Carolina 1998), a brilliant songwriter, a world-class guitarist, the prophet (Scott Alarik, Boston Globe 1999) and spiritual godfather of the Boston folk scene, and a local legend.

Geoff is a gifted songwriter who is a genius crafting his lyrics with very fine arrangements. Some of Geoff’s songs and co-writes have been recorded by other artists in the US, Canada, and Ireland, and some are also included in the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings of the Fast Folk Musical Magazine collection in Washington, D.C.  In 2005, “Cut by Wire”, his co-write with John Gorka, was sung live in Boston’s Symphony Hall by Dublin’s Mary Black.  Two of his CDs went to No.1 in their respective months on the international Folk-DJ chart.  In the ’80s, Geoff won four guitars at the National Fingerpicking Championships in Winfield, KS.  In addition, TV audiences have heard Geoff’s instrumentals on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, and PBS!

For his contributions to the acoustic music community in Greater Boston, the Cambridge Mayor’s Office in conjunction with the Boston Bluegrass Union (BBU) proclaimed February 13, 2004 Geoff Bartley Day in Cambridge.  Mr. Bartley has released thirteen full-length recordings and lives in a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts.

Chuck Hall has been a part of the New England folk and songwriting community since the mid-1980s, and a frequent guest at the Linden Tree. His newest album is called “ONE TREE.” It’s an album that features some of his oldest songs and some of his newest, with fresh instrumentation and orchestrations, composed and produced by Chuck in a single basement studio during the era of isolation brought on by the pandemic.

Chuck has been a resident of the Cape Ann community since 1984. He grew up on Cade Cod, and his English teacher mother and broadcaster father gave him a love for poetry, especially the poetry of the sea. And as he found his voice as a songwriter, the themes of home, God and community emerged in a profound way, and emerge once again on “One Tree.”

Some of Chuck’s songs have become a part of the musical atmosphere in New England and beyond over the years, from “Angels”, “Love Comes To the Simple Heart”, “Raining in Boston” and others, and his became a very recognizable voice in the community both as a broadcaster and performer. His songs have been recorded and performed by many artists, including Susie Burke (“Angels”), Dean Stevens (“Love Comes To The Simple Heart”) and Jack Hardy (“The Dollmaker’s Secret.”) In the 1990’s, Chuck was a popular folk DJ on WUMB-FM in Boston, and in 2008 he won the Rose Garden Performing Songwriter Competition.

In his touring days, Chuck traveled extensively along the East Coast, from his home in Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Miami, and played extensively in places like St. Augustine and Norfolk, Virginia. In more recent years, his travels have taken him to Atlantic Canada, where he has collected and written many songs based on the history and stories found there. hallfolk.com.

Kev G Mor is a Wakefield native singer-songwriter, who began his career as a teenager at the Linden Tree open mic in the mid-’80s after walking by the open doors and being welcomed inside. After a time in Alaska, he moved back to his hometown and began performing at area coffeehouses and subway stations releasing several CDs.  When invited to perform at the House of Blues, the capacity crowd demanded an encore.   In 2020, Kev released his album, “Live at Linden Tree” which can be found on all streaming platforms. During the pandemic, many of  Kevin’s amazing songs and great guitar playing were seen on Zoom and Youtube.  His song A  Church Without a Steeple is an ode to The Linden Tree Coffeehouse and was made into a video with photos by Bob Tanner showing many of Linden Tree’s performers over the past 36 years.

 Today, closing on 50 years, Kev is a neurodivergent creative who uses visual art, music, training, and experience to advocate for mental health awareness.  Kev uses music and art in service of several non-profit organizations including, Tunefoolery.org, performing regularly at Boston’s public shelters & psychiatric units.  Kev also collaborates with the organization The Neurodivergence Gallery, a traveling art gallery representing the world from neurodiverse perspectives. It is meant to bring uplifting and engaging conversations about mental health to community hubs.

Cliff Eberhard, an American folk singer-songwriter, is a founding member of the Fast Folk Music Cooperative in New York City. He joined Red House Records in 1997 and has recorded ten albums for the label. His 2009 “500 Miles: The Blue Rock Sessions” showcases powerful originals and unique covers and a reworking of his hit, “The Long Road,” a song more poignant after his two decades of touring and recording.

In 2019, Cliff reunited with old songwriting pals, John Gorka, Christine Lavin, Cheryl Wheeler and Patty Larkin to tour nationally again as On A Winter’s Night – five great writers in the round. The pandemic interrupted the tour, but it is scheduled to begin again in 2022.

In 2021, he released a new album of original songs, “Knew Things”, to critical acclaim and widespread Folk and Public radio airplay. The single “All the Things I Left Behind” and “Room in the City” are stand-out tracks.

Cliff”s songs have been recorded by many folks including Richie Havens, Buffy Sainte Marie, and Shawn Colvin. The New York Post says, “Eberhardt sings with passion and with wit…what makes his brand so rare is the self-assurance and poise he brings to his nearly flawless show.” http://www.cliffeberhardt.net.

Growing up riding horses and writing poetry on a cattle farm, Louise Mosrie began writing pop and folk songs after college. With a move to Nashville in 2004, she began co-writing with country, bluegrass, and folk artists which led to her 2008 album “Home” filled with stories and songs about southern life.

In 2014, Louise recorded ten songs of love, loss, and surrender in her album, “Lay It Down.” Collaborating with Cliff Eberhardt, the album was released to critical praise and made several top 10 lists in folk radio. She is currently working on a new album expected to be released in 2022. “Louise Mosrie may well be the brightest young folk-oriented artist to emerge from Nashville in many a year.” – Rich Warren, WFMT-FM, The Midnight Special, Chicago.

The Linden Tree Coffeehouse will continue its 37th season of acoustic music with its new hybrid format featuring two of our New England favorites: Janet Feld and Esther Friedman. With current Covid restrictions, concerts cannot be held at the UU Church. A limited number of vaccinated audience who register can be seated in our alternative location. Janet Feld is a performing songwriter appearing at folk festivals and coffeehouses nationally and internationally since the mid-80s. She has released 5 CDs, the latest one, Messy Beauty, was released in November of 2019, just before the world exploded. Janet is also the Founder and Chief Music Officer at Janet’s Planet: Music Lessons For Humanoids, Inc., offering lessons and classes to people of all ages. Her goal is to help people experience the fact that you don’t have to be from the “special talented planet” in order to play music.

Esther Friedman is a Boston-based acoustic singer & songwriter. She started writing songs in the mid-nineties after moving to the area from Cleveland, for Lesley University’s Expressive Art Therapy, Master’s Degree program. Inspired by buskers who braved street corners and t-stops she started writing and performing. In 1998, a compilation called Respond picked up her song Moon Over The Water. The compilation, and her song, received accolades from Billboard Magazine. Encouraged, she recorded her first CD, Eve’s Lament, with producer John Sonntag of Thunder Pumpkin Records in 1999. In 2016, she completed a second record, a concept album called Cult Confessions, with Producer, Doug Kwartler, Hollow Body Studio, her original soundtrack to a true story about a cultic misadventure. Today, she provides therapy via a private practice, counseling those in recovery from trauma, while performing and songwriting as much as humanly possible.

The Linden Tree Coffeehouse along with the Ivy Chord Coffeehouse will continue its 37^th season of acoustic music concerts with a new hybrid format featuring singer-songwriter Alastair Moock. The Boston Globe calls him “one of the town’s best and most adventurous songwriters” and The Washington Post says “every song is a gem.”

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Alastair Moock has made a name for himself on the folk and Americana circuit, touring throughout the U.S. and Europe and playing renowned events like the Newport Folk Festival. When Moock’s twins were born in 2006, he turned his focus to children’s music, releasing five award-winning albums for kids and families, including a 2013 Grammy Nomination, three Parents’ Choice Gold Medals, and ASCAP’s coveted Joe Raposo Children’s Music Award.

In 2016, Moock returned to ‘grownup music,’ releasing a new self-titled album produced by Mark Erelli with the end result of eleven shimmering new tracks that evoke a wide breadth of American musical textures – early Nashville, country blues, Western swing, a tinge of gospel – but, most of all, the kind of intimate storyteller’s approach at which Moock excels. On the album’s release, Rich Warren of the nationally syndicated Midnight Special proclaimed, “Moock reemerges as the best new, old singer-songwriter on the scene.”

In his own words, Alastair is now “firing on all cylinders,” performing shows for adults, kids, and everyone in between. Like the folk and blues heroes to whom he often pays tribute in his shows – Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt, Pete Seeger – Moock makes little distinction between his audiences: “Music is music, people are people. I just want to tell stories.”

The Linden Tree Coffeehouse announces the 2021 fall concerts of its 37^th season.  We were hoping that live in-person shows would resume this fall, but unfortunately, we will be streaming our first show and then moving to a hybrid show with Covid rates determining the number of vaccinated folks who can attend in person.  The Ivy Chord Coffeehouse is again co-sponsoring this season’s online concerts.

Nashville’s Claudia Nygaard will launch the series on Sat. Sept.18^th at 7:30 pm. Audiences loved her singing, songs, and fun personality when she appeared on our stage a few years ago.  Since then Claudia’s recent CD, LUCKY GIRL” has been one of the top Albums of the Year for Folk Alliance International Radio. Sing Out Magazine says, “Songs that rival the likes of Guy Clark and Ian Tyson.”

With a voice as warm and smooth as amber honey and impressive for both its power and intimacy, Claudia Nygaard delivers songs that are heartfelt, humorous, scrappy, and sensual. And so are the stories in between them. She is a captivating storyteller, with a twinkle in her eye that makes everyone in the audience think she is sharing a secret with them alone. Emotionally fearless, she shares her deepest sorrows with a rare vulnerability and tenderness one moment, then a quick wit and an outlandish, irreverent sense of humor the next.

Claudia tours tirelessly and has torn up the highways of all 50 states and performed in 9 foreign countries. She has appeared at over 200 fairs & festivals, including numerous times at the Kerrville Folk Festival. She has also been an emerging artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in New York. Claudia’s music straddles the fence between country and folk.
